Undercurrent
A poem that any good lifeguard will tell you
Any good lifeguard will tell you
Not to resist the current.
Isn’t it humbling that in all
Our invention and ingenuity,
Our apex predator status,
It all means nothing to a basic
Function of ocean water?
Even looking out to the
Expanse of the sea
Shrinks me to a grain of sand.
Yet we buy the lie that we are
Enough, that we have the strength
Inside of us, and I almost believed it
Until I felt the current and knew
I needed that lifeguard.
