Joy gets overlooked or put out of sight
Because she fails to offer simple lures.
We wanted quick and easy, glib and light.
But when our flat desires meet the contours
Of her complexity, her depth appears.
For while Joy’s smile can surely lift the heart,
Her cheeks are familiar with this life’s tears.
Though she shows herself in resounding art,
She’s also nearby in your lonely years
She announces the good news of Jacob’s Star,
Quenching each one of your fiery fears.
Look for Joy in His presence. It’s not far.
We light the candle of joy, now mourning,
But joy will still arrive in the morning.
