Advent Sonnet III: Joy
Joy gets overlooked or put out of sight
Because she’s not who we were looking for.
We wanted quick and easy, glib and light.
But when our flat desires meet the contours
Of her complexity, her depth appears.
For while Joy’s smile certainly warms the heart,
Her cheeks are acquainted with all life’s tears.
Though she shows herself in resounding art,
She’s also nearby in your lonely years
Announcing the good news of Jacob’s Star,
In order to quench your fiery fears.
Look for Joy in His presence. It’s not far.
We light the candle of joy, now mourning,
But joy will still be there in the morning.
