Advent Sonnet I: Hope
When this world is not all that it should be,
And every certainty given has failed—
Our questions are suspended in the sea
Between the continents of Known and Veiled.
In that darkness, we remember the night
Of our Savior, the Lamb, in a manger.
Those trapped in darkness have seen a great Light,
An anchor in this sea, firm through danger
Then we press ahead, to advent’s veiled shore,
Where the Lion of Judah, David’s Root
Fells each enemy with a single roar,
And we partake in the Tree of Life’s fruit.
We light the candle of hope, holding fast;
Suffering for now, but victors at last.
